Props to Larry, but he didn’t “invent this style of music”. He is credited with innovating the “slap” technique with Sly, but fusion/jazz/funk like this developed organically over time.

Well what would ToP be with out The Funky Doctor, right?

Their bari player never changed though-the Doctor is still in!

Not really.

TofP is R&B/Funk

Brecker Bros is Jazz/Funk Fusion

Tower of Power was dance/club music, this is jazz fusion.

I do LOVE both bands though. I was lucky enough to see ToP a few years back in Toronto. My Father (a baritone player) actualy knows a couple guys who played with TofP over the years in their ever-changing band.

try the bass part of the guitar battle by Victor and Reg Wooten. 32nd note slap is sick!

from 7:58 on I feel like I were hearing Pastorius, it becomes evident how Jason must have been inspired by him. taking inspiration from others it’s the essence of jazz himself. Jason has got a unique style anyway, pretty “busy” and “recognizable”, always creative. And I’m sure lots of musicians keep on taking inspiration from him now! That’s how jazz goes!

Bassist is great. Reminds me a bit of Tim Bogert in this solo. Good stuff!

jazz bass= 20 frets
precision bass= 20 frets

main differences are the pickups, neck width (jazz is thinner and rounder), pickgurard shape, body shape, and volume/tone controls

Prescision Basses dont have 24 frets – they have the same as a J-bass. Another difference between the two is the split (2-part) pickup of the P-bass
